This online short course is for you if you want to:

  • Gain a DEI leadership approach to better understand how diversity, equity, and inclusion manifest in the healthcare sector

  • Understand issues around racial, gender, and other identity-based discrimination within the healthcare sector

The skills to assess how DEI in the healthcare workplace is hindered by historical structures and biases, and how better team dynamics can reduce these issues.

Course curriculum

Over the duration of this online short course you’ll work through the following modules:

Module 1 Social determinants of health and health equity
Explore the social and structural characteristics that account for over 50 percent of the population’s health.

Module 2 Systemic medical racism
Understand how historical factors have institutionalized often-invisible medical racism.

Module 3 Healthcare equity across diverse populations
Understand how various healthcare inequities present across diverse social identities.

Module 4 Diversity in recruitment practices
Identify ways you can intentionally build and sustain recruitment practices that enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion in your healthcare team.

Module 5 Microaggressions and team dynamics
Understand the barriers to building inclusive teams and identify strategies to foster inclusivity in the workplace.

Module 6 Leading with a DEI lens
Equip yourself to lead coalitions for change from wherever you are in your organization.

Academic Directors

Dr. Magali Fassiotto

Associate Dean, Faculty Development and Diversity, Stanford University School of Medicine

Dr. Fassiotto has worked in organizational change and organizational management for 15 years in the private, government, and educational sectors. She manages Stanford Medicine’s efforts in professional development activities, strategic initiatives related to the advancement of a diverse and inclusive faculty, and research related to faculty development and diversity. Dr. Fassiotto also leads and facilitates workshops for students, trainees, faculty, and staff on implicit bias, effective mentorship, team building, leading inclusive teams, and building inclusive classrooms. She has published widely in the areas of faculty diversity, implicit bias, professional development, and organizational identity.

Dr. Yvonne (Bonnie) Maldonado

Senior Associate Dean, Faculty Development and Diversity, Taube Professor of Global Health and Infectious Diseases, Professor of Pediatrics (Infectious Diseases) and Epidemiology and Population Health, Stanford University School of Medicine

Dr. Maldonado is a pediatric infectious disease physician and epidemiologist who leads and advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. She’s currently serving as a senior fellow at the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, and as a liaison representative for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). Her research focuses on the epidemiology and prevention of infectious diseases, such as rotavirus, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, and pediatric HIV infection. She also led one of the first national centers focused specifically on using precision-medicine tools to improve the health of underserved ethnic and racial groups. Her hope is to bring her expertise and experiences as a leader in academic medicine and public health to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare.
